My Goals for 2018

3...2...1...Happy New Year, beautiful! Well, almost - not quite yet ;)

Since it's New Year's Eve and all, I thought I would pop in to make my weekly post on my personal goals for 2018. I know as a fellow ambitious babe, I love seeing what other people are aspiring to so I can get ideas for my own personal routine. So, I decided to type out all my goals for 2018 and how I plan to achieve them into this handy blog post - after all, writing goals down makes you 10 times more likely to succeed!

With 2018 coming up so quickly, I also want to know: what are your goals for the New Year? Where are you striving to improve and what are you planning to do to get there? Let me know in the comments below or @haleymarieblog on social media for the chance to be featured on HMB!

Now, without further ado, here are all the wild, wonderful goals I plan to achieve in good ol' 2018:

Dry Brushing

Why?

We all want beautiful, healthy skin and a detox-free bod - and that's exactly what dry-brushing can do for you. Dry-brushing stimulates your lymphatic system and helps boost cell-turnover, so you'll get smooth, glowing skin in no time. Not to mention that it's great for cellulite and for stress relief....

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Buy a dry brush on Amazon - you can get them for less than $4!
  • Dry brush before every shower.
  • Brush upwards to stimulate lymphatic flow.

The Five-Minute Journal

Why?

I love to journal, but sometimes I'm just too tired to write a full entry. That's when I came across the Five Minute Journal app, which prompts you to jot down bullet points every morning to set the tone for an amazing day. The practice includes both gratitude and goal-setting for the day ahead - two habits proven to make you happier and healthier over time!

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Buy the Five Minute Journal app.
  • Write a journal entry when I'm laying in bed (instead of playing games!).
  • Reflect at the end of the day with a nightly entry.

Running

Why?

I used to run two to three days a week before I sprained my left ankle. I've been in physical therapy ever since - and now that my ankle is finally healed enough, I want to start running again so I can eventually train for my first 10K, half-marathon and marathon.

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Save up for a pair of new running shoes.
  • Use my Fitbit to motivate me to run.
  • Schedule running in my planner 2-3 times per week.
  • Register for a 5K race!

Weekly Financial Review

Why?

Looking at your bills each week, no matter how bad the damage, is a healthy habit to get into. You can learn so much about your spending patterns and what expenses can be cut out simply by reviewing your bank statements. But, if you're anything like me, you probably avoid doing this because you don't want to feel guilty about how much you spent - which is the wrong attitude! In 2018, it's time to lose the attitude of shame and gain an attitude of self-improvement, amirite?

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Make it part of my Sunday self-care ritual.
  • Sit down with a hot tea (or wine....), some Netflix and my bank statements.
  • Highlight expenses that can be cut.

Studying Ahead of Time

Why?

In 2017, I became obsessed with my studyblr (check me out at haleymariestudies!). Not only are studyblrs gorgeous places for study inspo, but they're also incredibly helpful resources that have taught me a lot about the right way to study. I've learned that it's important to start studying as soon as you get the material so you're not overwhelmed when exam time rolls around - which is exactly what I plan to do in 2018.

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Stock up on adorable stationary at sites like Mochithings and Amazon.
  • Make a habit of re-writing my notes and/or making flashcards right after class.
  • Set aside an hour before bed every night to review the most difficult concepts.

Becoming a Minimalist

Why?

Like most of us, I have altogether too much stuff - and what's worse, half of my lifestyle seems to be focused on acquiring new stuff! As much as I love my beauty and fashion products, I want to cut back and start living a less material life. I would rather spend my money where it counts - or better yet, save it for traveling and new experiences after graduation.

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Sell old items online and purchase quality (vs. quantity) items.
  • Save more, spend less.
  • Try a 30-day minimalist challenge like this one.

Cut Back on Sugar and Soy

Why?

I've had terrible PMS as long as I can remember - like, the kind that interferes with my moods and relationships to an extreme degree. This kind of PMS is called PMDD, and can often be caused by a hormonal imbalance - aka too much estrogen or too little progesterone. To combat this, I want to adopt a healthier diet, freeing myself of the phytoestrogens in soy and the dangers of sugary drinks!

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Stop adding flavored syrups to my Starbucks order - a plain latte is good enough for me!
  • Drink almond and coconut milk instead of soy.
  • Eat lean meats and fish instead of tofu and fake meats.

Read a Book a Week

Why?

I wish I read more, but I often complain that I don't have enough time. At the same time, however, I can somehow binge episodes upon episodes of The Vampire Diaries in a matter of days....hmm! That's why in 2018, I want to try to read a book a week: both to cut down on my TV-watching habit and to tackle more on my long reading list.

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Use my Goodreads account to start a reading list.
  • Borrow more books from my local library.
  • Take my Kindle with me on the subway.

Learn Acoustic Guitar

Why?

Honestly, this is one of those oddball goals I want to achieve for no reason other than that it would make me sublimely happy! I want to learn to play some of my favorite country songs by my fave artists, such as Carly Pearce and Luke Combs.

How I'm Going to Do It:

  • Trade in my old electric for an acoustic guitar.
  • Use apps to learn how to play different chords.
  • Learn a new song every week or so by looking up the tabs.

What's your number one goal for 2018? LMK in the comments below or @haleymarieblog on social media!

FAQs About the Hormonal IUD (Birth Control Update)

Hello, beautiful! I mentioned in my post on my hormonal acne that my last birth control update, all about getting the Liletta IUD, was super well-received - which got me thinking about how I hadn't done a birth control update in a really long time. So, here we are!

I wanted to update you guys on my experiences with the IUD for many reasons, but the main one is that my first post about my IUD only covered why I got it and what my insertion was like. Now that I've been living with it for a few months, it's time for me to tell you what having an IUD is really like, down to every last dirty detail.

To make this more interesting, I've decided to answer some of the most commonly searched questions about the hormonal IUD from answerthepublic.com. (Bloggers, this tool is a super cool way to generate ideas and titles for blog posts; for everyone else, well, it's just all-around useful!) That way, instead of giving my opinion about the IUD, I can give you guys the info and let you decide for yourselves if this birth control method is right for you and your lifestyle...

Now, let's answer some FAQs, shall we?

What is the hormonal IUD and how does it work?

Let's start with the basics: IUD stands for "intrauterine device." Some docs also call these IUCs, or "intrauterine contraceptives."

In general, there are two types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal. The non-hormonal version contains copper wire that somehow repels sperm. We still don't know exactly how the copper IUD prevents pregnancy in this way, but scientists have tons of theories that they're still trying to crack.

However, we're here to talk about the hormonal version, which prevents pregnancy in the same way that other hormonal methods - such as the pill, implant and patch - do: by thickening the cervical mucus and preventing ovulation. Even if you didn't realize it, you've probably heard of the hormonal IUD by one of its many brand names, such as Mirena, Skyla, Liletta and Kyleena. (Pretty names, amirite?)

What hormone does the IUD release?

Unlike birth control pills, the IUD releases only one hormone. That hormone is called progestin, and is a synthetic form of the female sex hormone progesterone, which regulates many aspects of your menstrual cycle.

Progesterone is responsible for various symptoms during your period, pregnancy and even PMS. For example, without the characteristic drop in progesterone that happens at the end of the menstrual cycle, you would never have a period again! (And while that might sound appealing now, in a couple years when you're ready to have kids - should you choose to have kids, that is - you might not love it so much.)

Progestin, on the other hand, is a man-made version that mimics the role of progesterone in the body. It's because of the synthetic hormone progestin, found in all hormonal birth control from the mini pill to the IUD, that the cervical mucus thickens (making it difficult for sperm to reach an egg). In other words, you have progestin to thank for pregnancy protection when you use any kind of hormonal birth control! How cool is that?

What are the benefits of the hormonal IUD?

One reason why the hormonal IUD is popular with some women - like moi - is because it contains fewer hormones than other methods, which means women - also like moi - who are sensitive to estrogen and progesterone will probably experience fewer negative side effects than they maybe did on the pill, the patch or the shot. Think about it this way: whereas the pill has to pass through your entire body before it gets to your reproductive system, the IUD is already RIGHT THERE! So, it takes a much lower dose of hormones to "get the job done," so to speak.

Additionally, since you don't have to remember to do anything before having sex when you have an IUD, the IUD is one of the most effective methods of birth control out there...like, we're talking 99% effective, people. Basically, as long as you check your strings every month to ensure the device is still in place, you'll be good on pregnancy protection for the next 3-5 years. (But please remember to use barrier methods, too, since the IUD won't protect you from STIs!)

Does the hormonal IUD cause weight gain?

Personally, I haven't noticed a significant weight gain since I got the hormonal IUD - I've actually noticed that I've lost a couple of pounds in the past year or so! However, I attribute that more to my antidepressants than to my birth control method.

That isn't to say that the hormonal IUD can't cause weight gain. Basically, anything that tinkers with your hormones can cause fluctuations in your weight - including your ordinary, unregulated menstrual cycle! (Ever noticed that you look and feel fatter when you're PMSing? Yeah, that's why.)

All things considered, there's one fact I think we can all agree on: you'll gain less weight on the IUD than you will when you're pregnant. So, if you're not in the market for a baby anytime soon, I would choose a birth control based on efficacy, NOT based on whether or not it will make you fat.

Does the hormonal IUD stop your periods?

Long answer made short, it can! In my experience, I've had gradually longer cycles and lighter periods with my Liletta IUD - and hey, I'm not complaining! Considering how expensive it is to keep replenishing your tampon supply every month, who wouldn't trade in their period for some effective long-term birth control?

According to Bedsider, about 1 in 5 users of the Mirena and Liletta IUDs will stop having a regular menstrual period within the first year of use. That doesn't mean that anything's wrong with you; it just means you're lucky!

As for the rest of us, you're pretty likely to experience lighter, less painful periods on the hormonal IUD. But, please note that this is not the case for the copper IUD - in fact, Paraguard can actually cause the opposite, aka extra-heavy, extra-painful periods. Yeah....ouch.

Can the hormonal IUD cause acne?

In my experience, YES! The hormonal acne problem is a very real, very pressing issue in my life right now - I even wrote a blog post all about it, which you can read by clicking here.

Not everyone will automatically get acne just because they get an IUD, of course, since everyone reacts to different birth control methods in different ways. That being said, if you're taking birth control solely for acne-control - and not because you're sexually-active - you're probably better off sticking with oral contraceptives than getting a hormonal IUD.

On the other hand, if you are sexually-active, it's up to you where acne figures into your birth control equation. For most people, I would say a few more zits are worth the relief that long-term pregnancy protection provides. But seeing as acne can seriously damage your confidence (and therefore your sex life), I can also see why some girls might be opposed to the IUD if they thought it would make their skin worse.

Ultimately, it's up to you to make these decisions for yourself, but I still think my IUD has been totally worth the side-effects...yes, even the acne!

Can the IUD cause yeast infections?

For some women (like me), the answer is a resounding YUP! And it can also increase your risk for another type of infection known as bacterial vaginosis, aka BV. On top of that, it heightens your risk for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) if any kind of infection goes untreated - so, if you experience any kind of funky odor or discharge on the IUD, it's important to see a doctor and get treated ASAP. Unless you've had a yeast infection before and are 100% certain what it looks and feels like, you really shouldn't use an over-the-counter product like Monistat without consulting with your gyno.

Of all the side-effects I've experienced with the IUD, this one has definitely been the most annoying one, and the only one that really interferes with my quality of life. Since last May when I got the IUD, I've had two bacterial infections two months apart...followed by a yeast infection each time, since the intravaginal medication they prescribed me can cause them.

So, yeah, the IUD isn't always pretty. That's why they don't necessarily recommend them for women who are at high risk for contracting STIs, such as women who engage in unprotected sex with multiple partners: because your risk of more serious complications is all that much higher. As for BV and yeast infections, there's not much you can do to prevent them - but there is some evidence to suggest that taking a probiotic regularly can help balance your vaginal flora and keep the nasty bad guys from overgrowing. (I've taken a probiotic for about a year now, and I'm still TBD on if it actually works for me or not.)

Can the IUD cause infertility?

Absolutely not. In fact, the IUD is one of the best choices for women who are looking to become pregnant within the next few years, since your fertility essentially returns to normal as soon as it's removed (unlike other methods like the pill or shot, which take a little bit more time to wear off).

Basically, as the Huffington Post explained, there used to be this really shitty IUD called the Dalkon Shield on the market in the 60s and 70s. Not only did it cause infertility, but it also caused some women to lose their uteruses - and even their lives.

IKR? Shady stuff. But that doesn't mean you should give the modern-day IUD a bad rap! Apart from the fact that it's also an intrauterine form of contraception, today's IUDs have nothing in common with that ancient ladykiller. So, you have nothing to fear - there's no link between having an IUD and having fertility issues.

How much does the IUD cost?

I hate having to give you guys such wishy-washy answers, but again, this really depends on a couple of factors. Firstly: do you have insurance? If your health insurance still covers the IUD (#handsoffmybc), your out-of-pocket costs could drop from triple-zeros to double-digits. Between my Planned Parenthood copay and our insurance's deductible, I only had to pay about $20 out-of-pocket for my IUD.

Secondly: which IUD do you want? Mirena and Kyleena each cost around $500, plus any costs from your doctor's office for insertion and removal. Skyla costs even more than that, charging between $650 and $700 minus any insertion and removal costs.

If you can't afford to pay hundreds of dollars, never fear - you still have one option! The most affordable hormonal IUD by far is Liletta, the IUD that I have. The makers of Liletta launched a low-cost program to help vulnerable patients pay for the IUD. If your insurance doesn't cover the IUD, you can basically apply for a debit card that will allow you to pay between $75 and $125 for the IUD (not including any costs for insertion and removal) - and get your second Liletta for as little as $0. YASSSSSS, Liletta!

Which hormonal IUD is the best one?

There's really no clear answer. Since birth control is so personal to every woman, there's no one-size-fits-all approach that will suit every woman. However, you might want to consider a couple of factors when it comes to choosing the hormonal IUD that best meets your needs:

  • Availability. Your insurance may only cover one kind of IUD, or your local family-planning clinic (such as Planned Parenthood) may only carry one type. Alternatively, if you're getting it inserted by your doctor, you can usually choose which kind of IUD you would like them to order, as long as it's covered by your insurance plan.
  • Price. Liletta is the cheapest hormonal IUD, followed by Mirena and Kyleena. Skyla is probably the most expensive option - but thankfully, Liletta and Kyleena are both comparable to Skyla.
  • Size. Most women who haven't had children will receive either Skyla, Liletta or Kyleena, since these IUDs are made to be smaller than the Mirena IUD, which was originally designed for women who have already given birth.
  • Staying power. Not every IUD lasts as long as the next! Mirena lasts the longest, since it contains the highest doses of hormones. You can keep Mirena for up to 7 years (but obviously, like any IUD, you can have it removed at any point before then, too!). In second place, Kyleena can be kept for 5 years. You might have heard that Liletta could only be kept for 3 years - but luckily for me, it was recently extended to 4! In last place, Skyla only lasts for 3 years (but that doesn't make it any less effective as a form of birth control).
  • Efficacy. Good news here: all of the hormonal IUDs are over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy! Woohoo!

Tips for Better Leadership Skills

Hello, beautiful! In case you haven't guessed yet, leadership is something that's close to my heart, and something I'm passionate about fostering in other women. That's part of the whole reason I blog, after all: to give young women the confidence they need to get straight As, land that internship and look fabulous while they're doing it ;)

As a kid, I used to get called bossy a lot, both by my parents and my teachers. Without realizing it was harmful to me, the adults in my life used to discourage me from being "bossy" by telling the other kids what to do and instead encouraged me to be nice. That was when I learned that what people want out of a little girl is the exact opposite of what they want in their sons: nice, sweet, quiet, respectful. Not everything that I naturally am, and everything I strive to be on a daily basis.

Then I read about the research that Girl Scouts is doing on young women and leadership, and found out that girls get called bossy way more often than boys - no surprise there. Based on their findings, they're now recommending that parents and teachers call young girls leaders, strong-willed or determined instead of bossy or intimidating. Wouldn't that be so awesome, if no girl had to grow up believing she wasn't cut out to lead?

Girl Scouts was the first place I learned to hone my leadership skills, but I didn't stop there. I kept going in college when I went Greek and became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. Our motto as Thetas is "leading women," something that I strive to live by every single day. Most recently, I'm living that out as Boston University Panhellenic's newest VP of Leadership and Chapter Development. So, basically, my whole job is to lead the Greek community and teach other women how to be leaders - talk about a dream come true!

Today, I'm here to share some of the leadership skills that helped me get where I am today, and how I developed them. To me, leadership isn't always a natural-born talent, but something you nurture and develop over time. Even if you don't identify as a leader now, by the end of this post, I hope you'll discover ways that you can become one - and already are one - by reading what I've written here today.

What Is a Leader?

I know, I know: this header sounds like a cheesy Powerpoint slide in a class presentation. But before I get into how you can become a good leader, I wanted to talk about what makes a good leader. The definition of a leader is different for everyone, but here are a couple of the leadership traits I find most important:

  1. Passion. The most important quality in any leader is passion. Without passion, you won't be able to inspire and energize a team to achieve its goals.
  2. Determination. A leader must be able to clearly see her goals, and cannot let anything stand in her way.
  3. Cooperation. That being said, a good leader would never stomp all over her team - she isn't "bossy," after all. Instead, she's all about that teamwork and cooperation.
  4. Lightheartedness. The best leaders I've ever met never take themselves too seriously. Everyone who's inspired and connected with me, from professors to professional mentors, has had a good sense of humor on her shoulders.
  5. Seeing the bigger picture. When you're in charge of a big project, it's easy to get tunnel vision. That's why the best leaders are the ones who can see the bigger picture and constantly keep others on track to succeed.

How to Become a Better Leader

Now that I've talked a little bit about what leadership means to me, I'm ready to tell you guys all my top secrets for becoming a better leader....well, sort of.

Truth is, there's no shortcut to amazing leadership skills. (Sorry!) Just like anything else in life, you have to put in the work if you want to become a better leader. And the best way to do that is through practice - which brings me to my very first tip! (Not to mention four others...)

1. Step up to lead.

The best way to become a better leader is to, well, lead! If you want to become a great leader, you have to have that experience to help you figure out what your leadership style is and where you can improve. My recommendation? Run for an officer position in your club. Whether it's president of the chess club or chief financial officer of your sorority, sitting in some position - whether big or small - will help you gain confidence as a leader and teach you exactly what it takes to lead.

2. Lead by example.

Even if you're not a leader in a formal position, you can still be a leader in your own life. This is called "leading by example" - you know, that old cliche your mom used to use to keep you from underage drinking in high school. Well, it has a purpose! When you lead by example, you try to present your best self to the world, and don't do anything you wouldn't want your friends or family to do. For example, if your club has a social media policy, you post fun group photos that include everyone, yet still abide by the club's rules.

3. List your role models.

Take out a pen and paper! (Yes, RIGHT NOW!) Set a phone timer for two minutes. In those two minutes, I want you to write down as many people as possible who you think of when you think of the word "leader." Here are just a few of the names I came up with when I tried this:

  • Emma Watson. Ambassador to the U.N., advocate for girls & sex-positive voice in the media. YASSS, girl!
  • Maya Angelou. Started a racially-inclusive, body-positive poetry revolution and empowered countless women through her words.
  • Michelle Obama. Not only a tireless champion of healthy eating and exercise, but also humanized herself and stayed humble as First Lady in the media and beyond.
  • Oprah. Overcame impossible circumstances to become one of the world's richest self-started women.
  • Taylor Swift. Continues to make fearless art despite endless waves of negativity. One of Time Magazine's Silence Breakers in 2017.
  • Dolly Parton. The first female icon in country music, who became known for her emotional lyrics and outspoken nature.
  • Kate Middleton. Balances life as a mother, wife and actual princess like a literal pro - all while wearing four-inch heels. If that's not leadership, IDK what is.
  • Seth Rogen. One of the most well-known faces in comedy. Uses his fame to raise money for Alzheimer's disease.
  • Joe Kennedy. The Congressperson I am most inspired by at present, and a tireless champion for women and the middle-class.
  • Michelle Wu. Asian-American, woman, lawyer and President of Boston City Council. Talk about shattering glass ceilings!
  • Holly Madison. Dared to break silence around Hugh Hefner's sketchy behavior despite slut-shaming and cruel backlash.

The next time you have a leadership dilemma, I dare you to think about what one of your role models would encourage you to do in the same situation. Looking at your situation from this angle might just change your whole perspective!

4. Find a mentor.

Having role models is nice and all - but sometimes, you need to know a real flesh-and-blood person who you can turn to when you need leadership advice. For me, these people are my mom, my political science professor and my boss in the BU Dance office. My mentor-mentee relationship with these people is usually more informal than formal (I mean, I'm literally my mom's daughter - how informal can you get?), but there's still so much you can learn simply from watching the way a great leader works and thinks.

5. Practice power poses.

In case I haven't told you enough times already, I encourage you to watch Amy Cuddy's TED Talk on the importance of body language. Cuddy basically tells the audience that striking a power pose for a few seconds can completely transform our confidence before an important situation, such as an interview or presentation. So, next time you find yourself in a nervous bind, simply strike your best Wonder Woman pose and see how you feel in 10 seconds! You might just surprise yourself.

Lazy Girl Hair Hacks

Hello, beautiful - and welcome back to Haley Marie Blog for another installment of my Blogmas series!

As college girls, we're torn between two goals: perfect hair and a perfect GPA (among a million other big dreams, of course!). Usually, the number one thing standing between me and these goals is a lack of time.

That's why I'm here to teach you all the lazy girl hair hacks I've learned for getting a beautiful hair in the nick of time - because why spend hours blow-drying and heat-styling your hair when you could get the same results in under 10 minutes? (Yes, for real!)

1. How to Get Rid of Split Ends Naturally

Quite frankly, split ends suck - and the only way to get rid of them (or so we've been told) is to cut them off. Haircuts, however, can be expensive for a college gal on a limited budget....so, here's a little hair mask you can do to get rid of them at home:

Whisk together one egg yolk, three tablespoons of olive oil and one tablespoon of honey in a bowl. Then, liberally apply this mixture to the ends of your hair and allow it to sit for one hour before washing. Repeat this every two weeks and I promise you'll never have to chop off your hair just because of some split ends again!

2. How to Nix Frizz Overnight (Really!)

Don't believe me? Here's how: switch out your regular cotton pillowcase for one made from satin. It's that simple!

Satin protects your hair from frizz by locking in the natural oils and moisture that keep your hair shiny and smooth. You can get a satin pillowcase for cheap at your local beauty or department store - this one is $12 from American Eagle. Pull it onto your favorite pillow and get ready for the best beauty rest of your life!

3. How to Wake Up With Perfect Curls

Curling your hair isn't just time-consuming - it's also incredibly damaging for your hair. Trust me when I say that no one wants dry, lifeless locks as a result of over-processing! So, what's the alternative, you ask? Here's the simple how-to on getting perfect curls without the heat:

Take your shower at night so you go to bed with wet hair. Add a little bit of light product, such as a sea salt spray, to your locks. Then, twist your hair into a loose bun on the top of your head and secure with mini claw clips...and voila! Tomorrow morning, you should wake up with the gorgeous curls your heart's been dreaming of.

4. How to Perfectly Air Dry Your Hair

I often find myself wanting to shower between classes, but not wanting to go to class with soaking wet hair. Solution? Perfectly prep your hair so you can air dry it beautifully with no effort at all!

Before heading out of the house, work a little bit of mousse into your wet hair with a wide tooth comb. Scrunch the product into your hair to let it set, then gently dry your hair with an old t-shirt (to prevent frizz). Flip your head upside down one time to add a little bit of volume - and there you have it! Gorgeous hair, zero effort and all on-the-go.

5. How to Grow Your Hair Faster

Many girls cut their hair off in an impulse decision before college, wanting to try out a new version of themselves than who they were in high school. At the same time, lots of girls end up regretting that decision and wishing they had their long, luxurious locks back! Some people would say it just takes time - but there's actually a better (and quicker!) way to grow long hair in a flash.

You can follow a few simple steps to strengthen and lengthen your hair over time. First thing's first, you'll want to make sure you're trimming your hair regularly to remove the dead ends (or use my split end mask to repair it). Secondly, take biotin vitamins to give your hair the nutrients it needs to grow long and strong. Finally, wash your hair with a shampoo containing a natural oil like argan or coconut to repair your hair and stimulate growth. Follow all those steps to a T and you should see a difference in little time at all!

6.  How to Get Beachy Waves in Five Minutes Flat

Beachy, effortless waves have been all the rage for a few years now. If you're a fan of gals like Karlie Kloss and Taylor Swift, you've probably been envying their "I-don't-care" hair for a long time now. Unlike Karlie and Taylor, you probably also don't have an entire hair team following you around wherever you go...but there's still a way! (And it takes less than five minutes flat.)

All you need to do is heat up your straightening iron on as high a temp as your hair can comfortably handle and spray it with heat protectant. Next, divide your hair into a few braids - the thicker your hair, the more braids you should use - and secure with an elastic. Then, all you need to do is run the flat iron along the braid and let your hair loose. If you'd like, you can scrunch with a little bit of sea salt spray - and that's it. Beach waves for days, headed your way! (Sorry, I like to rhyme.)

7. How to Brush Your Hair Without Breakage

If I had to sum up the experience of brushing my hair in three words, I'd choose tangles, tangles and more tangles. Most people just use whatever silly old hairbrush they find at their local CVS - but did you know there's a right brush and a wrong brush for your hair type? Here's how to know what kind of bristle brush is best suited for your unique mane:

  • If your hair is fine...use a boar-bristle brush to create sleek, polished tresses.
  • If your hair is coarse or natural...use a nylon brush for a little extra push and pull.
  • If your hair is thick...use a mixed-bristle brush to detangle your tresses without compromising shine.
  • If your hair is curly...use a wooden-bristle brush to keep coils intact.
  • If your hair is short (or you have bangs)...use a mini round brush with boar bristles to smooth out short strands.

8. How to Give Yourself a Mini Highlight At Home

The last thing a broke college girl wants to do is choose between a salon highlight or groceries for a month - but with skyrocketing prices, it can easily begin to feel desperate. But believe it or not, you can learn to give yourself baby highlighters on a budget for an upgrade to your look that costs less than $20.

For around $15, you can buy a reputable bleach kit like Manic Panic's and a pack of spoolie brushes. Then throw on an old t-shirt (in place of a protective salon cape) and get down to business! Follow this tutorial from The Beauty Department for the step-by-step instructions, and you'll have gorgeous at-home highlights in no time...and all without shelling out a Hamilton.

The End of Net Neutrality

Hello, beautiful.

From the title of this post, you can probably see that this isn't my usual cheerful, chipper content about beauty and college lifestyle. But this is something I have to say, both for me and for all of you who might be struggling to come to terms with the FCC's decision.

As I'm writing this, I'm sitting in my campus Starbucks with my final paper open in another tab for my legislative behavior class. I should probably be studying for finals right now, but all I can think about is the abominable legislative behavior we just witnessed in Washington.

If you don't know what net neutrality is - was - this policy was put into place by the Obama Administration to ensure all Americans could have free and open access to the Web. Without net neutrality, there's no stopping Internet providers from slowing down or even blocking access to certain websites, charging consumers higher rates to gain access to certain sites or even charging content creators for faster load times.

As a blogger, I wanted to write about this both to help me process my emotions and to let you guys, my readers, know what's going to happen to Haley Marie Blog and many of your other favorite sites.

First thing's first: I am NOT going to stop blogging because of the FCC's ruling. If you are also a blogger, I do NOT encourage you to stop, either! Blogging provides so much more than page views and sponsorships. It's a form of personal fulfillment, and the fact that I can help so many of you through my unique platform as a college influencer gives me so much purpose.

Second, you might be wondering what's going to happen (and what you can do) now that net neutrality isn't a thing. Well, let me make you a list:
  1. Let's face the scariest consequence first so we can just get it over with: Internet providers will be able to charge you to access your favorite sites, giving them a powerful form of control over what you can and can't see online. Soon, this could mean that bloggers like me have to pay providers for our content to become visible, or that you may not be able to access our content at all.
  2. Advocates dedicated to a free and open Internet will resort to legal action against the repeal. They will most likely argue that the decision is "arbitrary and capricious," or that Internet providers are being wrongly categorized and subjected to fewer regulations than they require.
  3. Organizations like the ACLU are asking Congress to take action to repeal the FCC's decision. This gives you a tremendous opportunity to take action. Click here to sign their petition for a free and open Internet. You can also click here to donate to the Freepress Action Fund's efforts to sue the FCC.
  4. Keep viewing and supporting your favorite websites, blogs and media outlets - especially the small ones. The more popular a website is, the more demand there will be for access. Don't just support me, though. Here are some of my friends/favorite bloggers whose blogs you should also show some love:
So, what am I going to do from here on out? Well, I'm going to keep doing what I've always done: I'm going to write. I'm going to voice my opinions on social media. And I'm going to keep blogging regardless of what Internet providers and civic organizations do or don't do about net neutrality.

The FCC will only win if we allow ourselves to be silenced. So, let's bang some pots and pans together, sound some blowhorns and scream at the top of our lungs. Let's make noise.

Comment below if you're with me to end the FCC's repeal of net neutrality.

25 Bullet Journal Spreads for Finals Week

Hello, beautiful! As you already know, it's Blogmas - and I hope you're enjoying it as much as I have been :) However, at least at my school, Blogmas overlaps with another popular blogging topic this time of year: finals week.

I put that in italics to emphasize just how ominous and dreadful the word "finals" can sound! As a first-semester freshman, I remember shaking in my boots at the way my professors characterized the final - only to breathe a sigh of relief when I actually took the exam.

TL;DR: as long as you're prepared, you're going to rock your finals! Organization is one of the key ways you can start preparing now to ace your exams. Lately, my favorite way to organize has been using my bullet journal more and more.

If you haven't heard of bullet journaling, it's about time you did! Bullet journaling is a method of organization that rolls a planner, to-do list and sketchbook all into one. You can customize your bullet journal as much (or as little) as you want because every spread is hand-drawn.

Each bullet journal contains an index, a monthly and a daily spread, along with as many other customized pages as you like. In this post, I'm gathering some of my favorite ideas for spreads and pages that will help you #bujo your way into finals week like a pro! Check out the 25 ideas below (one for every day of Blogmas - get it?) for the inspiration you need to start getting organized ASAP.
